Chapter Seventeen

Shandra stood to the side of the group chatting about people and events she’d never heard about. Martin had brought them to a barbecue at his brother’s house in Keller, a small community on the Sanpoil River an hour from the ranch.

On the drive, Aunt Jo had given her a brief rundown of the twelve bands living on the Colville Reservation and the four towns. Nespelem, Omak to the northwest, Inchelium to the northeast, and Keller in the south. Uncle Martin’s mother was of the San Poil band. She’d added that of course over the years they had married and there was a variety of different bands at each community and they now call themselves Colville after the reservation.

She didn’t expect to see or talk to anyone who would know the Randals but many of the older people at the barbecue came by, took hold of her hand, and told her they missed her grandmother. That Ella was missed by people in another town surprised and humbled her. The one summer she’d spent with her grandmother, Shandra had witnessed how the older woman was respected by everyone she talked to and who stopped by the ranch. But being here now, almost two years after her death, and still having people remember her so vividly, revealed she’d never really had a chance to meet the real woman that was her grandmother.

Andy strolled over. “You could be more hospitable.” He nodded to a man with short-cropped hair highlighted by a white streak slightly off-center of the top of his head. “That’s a friend of my Uncle Charlie. He’s been asking me all kinds of questions about you. Whether you’re single. What you do for a living.”

She glared at her cousin. “What did you tell him?”

“That you have a police man for a boyfriend, you make vases, and you have grandmother’s sight.” He laughed. “I thought sure that would put him off. He and grandmother never got along.”

Now she was interested in the man, but she continued to watch her cousin. She didn’t want the man to think she wanted him to come over and talk to her. “Why didn’t they get along?”

“Because he tried to take my mom from my dad before they were married. Ella saw it coming and warned mom to be wary of him.”

“Why did he want your mom? Did he love her?” She glanced over at her aunt, busy talking with a woman she knew to be the wife of the brother throwing the barbecue.

“He wanted everything my dad had. Max lives with relatives and finds odd jobs, but he never works harder than getting by. I don’t think he loved her. He just wanted to cause trouble for my dad.” Andy gestured with the pop can in his hand. “See how my dad stays a good distance from Max. It’s always like that at family gatherings.”

“Your father knows he has nothing to fear from this man. Your mom would never look at another man.” Shandra had witnessed the closeness of her aunt and uncle.
